Description
Nos 31 and 32 Frederick Road are a pair of semi-detached villas built between 1840 and 1850 as part of the Calthorpe Estate. They are constructed from red brick with stucco dressings. No 31 features a three-bay front with a recessed coach house, while No 32 has a fourth bay that incorporates the coach house as an early extension designed to match the original three bays. Both villas have a half-hipped slate roof with moulded flat eaves and tall corner chimney stacks, with the central stack featuring a stucco cornice and square pots.
The first-floor windows are framed with architrave surrounds that have eared feet and panelled sills. The ground-floor windows have similar architraves rising from a plinth, topped with cornices and very shallow pediments adorned with small acroteria. The left-hand ground-floor window of No 31 has been replaced by a late 19th-century canted bay window. The entrances are accentuated by engaged Ionic fluted columns that support deep entablatures, with panelled reveals leading to four-panel doors and rectangular fanlights.
No 31 also includes a slightly recessed two-storey gig house wing, which features a shallow stucco parapet band and a scroll-supported shallow block pediment above the centre. There is a single glazing bar sash window on the first floor, set under a gauged brick flat arch. The coach house has a basket-handle gauged brick arch with later-built doors.
