Description
Nos 33 and 34 on Frederick Road are a pair of semi-detached villas built between 1840 and 1850. They are smaller than the nearby Nos 31 and 32 but share a similar architectural style. The buildings are two storeys high, constructed of red brick with stucco dressings. They feature a symmetrical design with a three-bay main block and doorways that are paired at the center, leading to slightly recessed two-storey former coach house wings.
The villas have hipped slate roofs with moulded flat eaves and band-corniced brick chimney stacks, with ornamental pots on No 34. The ground floor windows are flanked by glazing bar sashes set in architrave surrounds with eared feet rising from a plinth, panelled sills, and shallow cornices, which are replicated on the first floor. The central doorways have similar architrave surrounds as the windows and are accessed by two steps. The doors feature two round arched panels and marginal glazed rectangular fanlights with panelled reveals.
The coach house wings are slightly lower than the main block. No 33 has a stucco pediment that contains an anthemion and scroll plaque, while No 34 features a stucco parapet band with a raised center crowned by a segmental stucco panel and flanked by shallow scrolls. The first floor windows have glazing bar sashes, and the ground floor former coach houses have been altered early on; No 33 has a tripartite sash window, and No 34 has a pilastered canted bay window.
