Description
Nos 41 and 42 on Calthorpe Road are a pair of semi-detached villas built around 1830, located in the Edgbaston area of Birmingham. These stucco-faced buildings are part of the Calthorpe Estate and are similar in design to Nos 39 and 40, featuring accompanying coach houses.
The main block has four bays, with one bay entrance wings set back on either side. The hipped slate roof has flat eaves and is topped with corniced brick chimneys. The façade is enhanced by a giant order of Soanian panelled pilasters, and stringcourses run along the sides, returning to the front up to the inset outer pilasters. The windows are revealed glazing bar sashes, with one ground floor window in each house replaced by a canted bay window from around 1860, which has dentil eaves and a hipped roof.
No 41 features a plain recessed doorway at the angle of the wing, complete with a rectangular fanlight. In contrast, No 42 has a similar doorway but is adorned with a tent-roof trellis porch that includes fan pattern spandrels. Each house is flanked by screen walls leading to the coach houses, which have segmental arched doors and side entrances.
