Description
Nos 21 and 22 Calthorpe Road are a semi-detached pair of early villas built around 1820-1830 as part of the Calthorpe Estate in Edgbaston. The buildings are two storeys tall and constructed of red brick. They feature a shallow moulded eaves band, a low pitch hipped slate roof, and brick chimney stacks.
No 21 has an unaltered three-bay front with four 4-pane sash windows in the flanking bays and three 4-pane sashes above the drawing room. It includes stucco sills, a frieze with rosettes, and shallow consoles to the cornices. The entrance door consists of six fielded panels within panelled reveals, topped by a radial swagged fanlight typical of the late 18th century. This is complemented by panelled pilasters, panelled sections of entablature, and a sharply profiled, modillioned open pediment. There is also a link wall to the left-hand side entrance, which is round arched.
No 22 has been altered around 1880, featuring canted brick bays with stucco cornices. It retains an original blind round-headed window above its original doorcase, which has slender Tuscan columns, an entablature, and a pediment blocking course, now converted into a window. The entrance is located at the side.
