Description

19 Calthorpe Road is an early villa from the Calthorpe Estate, dating to around 1820, with extensions made around 1880 at the corner with St James Road and at the rear. The original two-storey block features three bays, constructed of red brick, and has a low-pitched hipped slate roof with flat eaves supported by shallow brackets. The villa has sash windows adorned with grooved voussoir stucco flat arches and a stucco stringcourse. The taller entrance block, added around 1880, includes a hipped lantern on the roof and an arcaded timber entrance loggia with ornate carved work, leading to a vestibule that is at right angles to the original house. The entrance features a stucco arched doorway with foliage capitals, and there is a large window towards the road set in a brick pilaster frame. The rear of the villa includes canted bays. This building is noted for its early villa date and its group value within the area.
