Description
No. 43 Frederick Road is an Italianate stucco villa built around 1850-1855. It is part of a group of three similar villas, two of which are semi-detached (Nos. 43 and 44) and one detached (No. 42). The properties are tall, two storeys high, and have three bays. They feature a plinth, diamond-faceted rusticated quoins, and a bed string to the frieze with console triglyphs supporting flat eaves. The roofs are low gable ends covered with slate.
The central chimney stack for Nos. 43 and 44 is large and has a bracketed cornice. The first-floor windows are widely spaced, round-headed, and have archivolt arches on moulded console stops with panelled keystones. The ground floors have narrow tripartite windows with arched side lights, panelled friezes, and large consoles that support dentil cornices and shallow pediment-blocking courses.
There are projecting enclosed pilastered porches with three steps leading up to them. The entrances are arched with concave splays, panelled spandrels, keystones, bed moulds to the friezes, dentil cornices, and deep blocking courses. Fanlights are positioned above the panelled doors. Overall, this group of villas presents a striking example of Italianate architecture.
