Description
Nos 27 and 28 Calthorpe Road are a pair of three-storey semi-detached villas built around 1830, located in Edgbaston. They are constructed of stucco and feature three bays each, with a symmetrical design. Number 27 was altered around 1850 and includes a plinth, a first-floor sill band, and shallow bracketed eaves beneath a common nipped slate roof. The ground floor windows are set in shallow camber-headed panels, while the other windows are plain sashes.
Number 28 retains its original entrance porch, which is supported by unfluted Tuscan columns and features a triglyph frieze, a modillion course, and a blocking course. The round-arched door recess has inset fluted Tuscan half columns that support a modillion cornice, with a plain fanlight above and panelled reveals, soffit, and door. Number 27 has a canted bay window on the ground floor and a doorway from the same period that features a dentil course on large console brackets, but it does not have a porch.
Additionally, Number 27 includes a former coach house that has been integrated into a modern wing, maintaining the overall aesthetic. Number 28 has a hipped roof, two-storey brick coach house located behind a screen wall, which has a segmental arched entrance leading to a small yard.
