Description
This is a pair of semi-detached villas, numbers 39 and 40 George Road, dating from the 1830s to 1840s, located in Edgbaston. Number 40 has a roughcast finish, while the other villa is stuccoed. Each house has a two-bay front with a side entrance and a recessed wing. They are two storeys high with a hipped slate roof and stucco chimneys with flat eaves.
The front elevation features a shallow plinth and a sill band. First-floor windows are framed by architraves that extend down to the sill band, incorporating panelled aprons. Ground-floor windows have cornices supported on consoles, and contain glazing bar sashes. Number 40 was altered around 1860 with the insertion of canted bay windows on the ground floor, featuring miniature shafting and drip moulds over the sash lights, as well as projecting cornices. The side entrances are set within panelled pilaster frames topped with entablatures. The sill band continues, maintaining the same window pattern for two bays.
