Description

Nos 36 and 37 George Road are a pair of classical villas built around 1830, originally designed as identical detached red brick buildings with coach houses on either side. They are two stories high with three bay symmetrical fronts and shallow plinths. No 35, adjacent to these villas, has a stucco frieze and a moulded cornice, featuring short sections of parapet that flank a broad pediment. No 36 retains its frieze but lacks a pediment, having a rebuilt brick parapet with coping. Both villas have gable end slate roofs with flanking brick chimneys that have stucco cornices.

The windows are tall and feature revealed glazing bar sashes, with stucco courses on consoles, block pediments over the ground floor windows, and block stucco sills. Each villa has a central doorway framed by engaged Tuscan columns and an entablature with a pediment blocking course. The doors are panelled and set within panelled reveals, with rectangular fanlights; No 36 retains its original glazing pattern.

To the right of No 36 is a screen wall coach house with an upswept parapet and coping. To the left of No 37 is a lean-to two-story coach house that has a four-canted arch doorway, with doors made of diagonal tongue and groove.
