Description

Nos 30 and 31 George Road are a pair of semi-detached stucco villas built around 1830. They are two storeys high and were originally probably three bays each, with a symmetrical overall appearance. No 30 features an additional gabled bay and a lower two-storey service wing, while No 31 has a set-back one-bay wing to the left.

Both villas have a plinth, moulded flat eaves, and hipped slate roofs with cut-down stucco chimney stacks. The ground floor windows of No 30 are set in relieving arches with stucco lunettes that display a ribbed lovers knot pattern. The first floor has plain outer sash windows, with the central window located in an arched recess flanked by fluted pilasters and topped with a round head. The entrance is also in an arched recess, supported by fluted Tuscan columns and featuring a shallow bracketed cornice above the door and a fanlight.

The gabled extension on the right side of No 30 has a similar ground floor window with a ribbed knot arch and two plain first floor windows adorned with delicate X-pattern iron balconies. The service wing is located to the right. No 31 has a three-bay front with the same architectural details as No 30, but its entrance is in the recessed bay to the left. The centre bay of the front features a "ribbed knot" window, consistent with the rest of the ground floor. The doorway is recessed and overarched with Tuscan columns in the set-back one-window wing.

The rear elevations of the gardens include two additional X-pattern balconies and a scrolled Victorian balcony. No 31 features two canted bays that were added around 1850.
