Description

The original house and service coach house wings at The Skin Hospital, located at 35 George Road in Edgbaston, date from around 1830 to 1840. This substantial Grecian villa is two storeys high and features five bays, with a stucco finish and concave quadrant walls that create a forecourt carriage sweep. The central bay of the front is slightly recessed, and a stepped frieze runs beneath the flat eaves of the hipped slate roof, which is topped with corniced stucco chimneys. All windows are framed with architraves, with the central window on the first floor adorned with a cornice supported by consoles. The windows are fitted with plate glass sashes. The entrance doorway is flanked by engaged columns featuring Grecian Corinthian capitals, which support a deep entablature that overlaps the edges of the recess, with a blocking course above. To the left is a set-back service wing that has two architrave-framed windows. Across the yard is a first-floor lodge that connects to a two-storey painted brick coach house stable range, which extends to the street with a single-storey coach house frontage that has a pediment gable facing the road and flanking gate piers at the yard entrance.
