Description
Churchfield is a substantial Grecian villa built around 1830-1840, located on Church Road in Edgbaston. The building is two storeys high and has a stucco facade with a symmetrical three-bay front. To the north-west, there is a recessed service wing that is screened by a curved wall connecting to the coach house. The villa features a plinth, quoin pilasters, and a shallow central break in the same plane, along with a moulded cornice and an advanced end parapet over the center. The hipped slate roof is topped with corniced chimneys.
On the ground floor, the exterior has channelled rustication that extends over a tripartite stucco bow window, which is adorned with cornices and blocking courses. The first floor has three sash windows, which are late 19th-century replacements. A large porch with coupled plain shaft Doric columns and a deep entablature leads to a double panelled door with a rectangular fanlight.
The south-east garden elevation consists of four bays, with two bays closely set around a central shallow break. The ground floor rustication mirrors that of the front, featuring three French windows that are screened by a cast iron verandah from around 1870. This verandah has slender column standards with pierced work in the spandrels, a green key band, and a swept tent roof. The plain three-bay rear elevation has a central break and rusticated ground floor, with tripartite center windows and panelled risers beneath the ground floor window.
