Description

This is an 1840s stucco villa, located on Wellington Road in Edgbaston. The substantial building is set back behind a carriage sweep, and displays Grecian architectural details. The main block is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-bay façade. A fourth bay extends to the south, and a screen wall encloses a coach house to the north.

The villa has a deep plinth and prominent quoin pilasters, resting on moulded bases. A plat band runs around the building, and an impost string sits below the first-floor windows, with a matching frieze carried over the quoin pilasters and breaking the eaves cornice. A simple parapet sits above, with cornices and parapets returning to the stucco chimney stacks. The first floor has relatively squat, revealed sash windows. The ground floor features tripartite rectangular bay windows with panelled aprons and moulded stucco cornices. A square, pier porch with palmette and anthemion patterned capitals, a deep entablature with projecting cornice, and approached by a flight of steps flanked by ramped stucco walls is centrally located. The single-bay south extension has a carried-over main eaves cornice and shallow rusticated quoins; it contains a tripartite ground floor window and a single sash window on the first floor, both with cornices on consoles. A stucco screen wall to the north includes a segmental arched entrance to the coach house.
