Description

This is an ornate Italianate villa, dating from 1855, located at 49 Carpenter Road, Edgbaston. The villa is constructed of stucco and features a screen wall that connects it to a coach house on the right. The main building is two storeys high and is symmetrical, with a slightly projecting central bay. The facade is characterised by parallel rustication to the quoins, a plinth, an entablature between the floors which forms a parapet effect, a moulded bed to the eaves frieze containing rosette metopes set between enriched consoles, and coursed chimneys. The first-floor windows are round-headed, framed with scrolled consoles supporting shallow segmental pediments. The central first-floor window is similar but with a flat arch and a panelled frame featuring a scroll pattern, topped by a triangular pediment. The ground-floor windows are tripartite (divided into three parts) and feature similar details and moulded cornices. The enclosed porch has a round-arched entrance with side lights and an entablature with console brackets supporting a cornice. To the right is a double coach house, linked to the main villa by the screen wall, with a round-arched entrance leading to the yard. A set-back service wing is also present.
