Description

The Convent School of the Holy Child Jesus is a building located on Sir Harry's Road in Edgbaston, originally constructed between 1830 and 1840 as a Grecian-style villa. This two-storey, three-bay stucco villa has been significantly extended for school use, featuring a large three-bay wing to the northeast that maintains a sympathetic design with quoin pilasters, and a substantial chapel wing to the southwest made of brick and stone dressed materials from the 20th century.

The original villa's façade includes coupled pilasters that articulate the bays on both floors, with a plinth, a first-floor entablature, and a main entablature. The central bay is slightly advanced and topped with a pediment that has an anthemion finial, which is also present on the terminal dies of the blocking course. The central first-floor tripartite window is set within a Composite columned aedicule adorned with an anthemion frieze. The flanking windows consist of two lights, each divided and flanked by pilasters that support entablatures. The right-hand ground floor window features a tripartite pilaster frame. There is a central projecting Tuscan pilaster with an entablature that breaks forward over the ground floor.

The rear elevation, which faces a terraced garden, displays similar architectural details but includes a central two-storey canted bay. Although the interior has undergone significant alterations, it still retains the original staircase located on the northeast side of the hall. This staircase features a curved corner well that is illuminated by an oval light. Behind the canted bay on the first floor, there is a barrel-vaulted gallery with arcaded walls, and the lunettes contain stucco reliefs depicting scenes from classical mythology.
