Description

Beech Court is a substantial detached villa built between 1830 and 1840, located on Wellington Road in Edgbaston. This two-storey building features three bays, with the central bay prominently advanced and a one-bay wing set back on the north side. The exterior is richly detailed with broad giant Corinthian pilasters at the corners, along the centre break, and at the set back wing, all resting on moulded bases. A moulded plat band runs along the first floor, supporting a deep entablature with a cornice featuring moulded modillion brackets and a parapet. The concealed slate roof is complemented by corniced stucco chimney stacks.

The first-floor windows are set within panels, framed by pilasters with entablature lintels. The flanking ground floor windows extend down to a shallow plinth and are designed as tripartite sashes, with large console brackets projecting from the dividers and scrolling up between Greek key panels to the plat band. A similar tripartite arrangement is found at the doorway in the centre break, which includes sidelights and a panelled door, with matching console brackets and Greek key panels leading to a high-set moulded cornice.

On the south side, there is a one-bay return of the giant order, followed by a larger but lower two-storey stucco wing that features a two-storey canted bay added between 1860 and 1870. At the rear, in the north-west corner, there are stable and service accommodations. Beech Court is set well back from the road in large grounds, with an asymmetrical carriage drive leading to the entrance.
