Description

No. 45 Wellington Road is an imposing stucco villa built around 1855-1840, designed in an ornate Grecian style and set back behind a carriage sweep. The building features a symmetrical two-storey front with five bays, where the outer bays are recessed as subsidiary wings. To the south side, there is a screened coach house and service yard.

The villa has a plinth that serves as a base for pilaster strips, which support a deep ground floor entablature adorned with rosettes. The first floor showcases pilasters with scrolling capitals that uphold an ornate stucco frieze over the outer bays and the central block. Above, there is a plain entablature with a large cornice and a high parapet, with the bays flanking the centre featuring panels of pierced portholes. The lower wings have plain entablatures.

The ground floor windows are tripartite, with consoles supporting the lintels and slightly projecting as rectangular bays. The first floor sash windows also project similarly, with the central window framed by an architrave surround and a moulded pediment. The wings have matching window designs.

A large central porch is set on high plinths flanking the steps, featuring square piers with ornate oversized Corinthian capitals that support a deep entablature, which breaks forward and continues from that over the ground floor. Above the porch, there is a balcony parapet pierced by ornamental portholes and projecting corner blocks.

To the south side, a screen wall is pierced by a gateway leading to the service and stable yard, flanked by large piers with cornices and blocking courses. The slate roof is concealed by a parapet, and the flanking stucco chimney stacks are positioned on raised sections of the flanks, topped with panelled parapets that step up.
