Description
No. 60 Wellington Road is a Grade II listed villa built between 1820 and 1830. This attractive stucco building is set back from the road behind a forecourt and features two storeys with three symmetrical bays, showcasing Grecian architectural details. There is a one and a half bay extension to the south that dates from around 1850.
The villa has an elaborate design with a recessed center, a plinth, and a first-floor sill course. It is adorned with prominent giant pilasters that rise from the plinth, featuring bands of anthemion decoration as capitals below breaks in the cornice. The dies aligned in the parapet above are decorated with wreaths. The slate roof is complemented by banded corniced chimneys.
The outer first-floor windows are framed with eared architrave surrounds, while the central window has a plain reveal with a projecting dropped lintel supported by consoles, and a panel in the parapet above. The ground floor windows are framed by pilaster strip frames, with acanthus consoles supporting dropped lintels that are decorated with wreath and scroll ornament. The first-floor sill course breaks forward over these windows.
The entrance is framed by a tripartite design that spans the full width of the recess, featuring quarter pilasters beside the sidelights and full pilasters flanking the door. The entablature above breaks forward and is embellished with wreath ornament. The door itself consists of six fielded panels.
At the rear, the garden elevation has been altered between 1850 and 1860, featuring two-storey canted bays and a curved-sided bay in the center, along with a canted verandah that has fretted eaves.
