Description
No. 43 Wellington Road is a substantial detached stucco villa built around 1840. It is set back behind a carriage sweep and a front garden, with a service wing and coach house accessible from the north side on Carpenter Road. The villa features a two-storey, three-bay symmetrical front with a plinth and ground floor that is channelled up to the first floor sill band. The deep flat eaves of the hipped slate roof are adorned with a bed mould, and there is one stucco chimney with a cornice and ornamental pots.
On the ground floor, the original windows from around 1860 have been replaced by two large canted bay windows, which have channelled stucco frames and deep entablatures topped with cast iron urns. The first floor has plain revealed glazing bar sashes. A large projecting doorway is framed simply but prominently, supported by large console brackets that hold up a dropped frieze featuring scroll work decoration, with a moulded pediment above.
To the north, a screen wall extends in front of the recessed service wing, linking to the coach house, which has a hipped roof and a segmental arched entrance set into its long flank facing Carpenter Road.
