Description

Nos 35 and 36 Carpenter Road are a pair of nearly semi-detached stucco villas built around 1830-1840, designed to be viewed as a single composition. They each stand two stories tall and consist of three bays. The buildings feature a plinth and a moulded sill course, with flat eaves beneath nipped slate roofs that have corniced chimneys on either side.

On the first floor, the villas have sash windows set in architraves, while the ground floor windows are adorned with panelled aprons and framed by pilaster strips that rise from the plinth. These are topped with elongated moulded console brackets that support cornices above. No 36 has canted bay windows on the ground floor, with cornices that return over similar consoles on pilaster strips.

Each villa has a central porch supported by Ionic columns and pilasters attached to the walls. The entrances feature four-panel doors with marginal glazing and rectangular fanlights, accessed by steps. No 36 retains its original glazed and panelled inner door.

No 35 includes a gradient screen wall with double yard doors that curve to the left, connecting to a half-storey coach house. This coach house has centred arched double panelled doors and a small attic window above, topped with a hipped slate roof. No 36 has a similar coach house arrangement but features a straight link wall to the projecting structure.
