Description
Apsley House is a substantial and impressive Grecian stucco villa built between 1825 and 1830. It is set well back from the road and approached by a drive that leads to a carriage sweep. The villa features two tall storeys with a symmetrical three-bay front. The ground floor is built out with a plinth and channelling on either side of the porch. The first floor has a slightly advanced centre, with an eaves cornice and parapet, and a triangular plain pediment at the centre. The gable end has a slate roof, treated as moulded pediments, and there are corniced stucco chimneys with ornamental pots. The ground floor has plain revealed sash windows, while the first-floor windows are surrounded by architraves and fitted with shutters, featuring widely spaced glazing bars.
The porch, flanked by the built-out ground floor, is supported by fluted Ionic columns between square piers, which hold up an entablature with a balustraded front parapet and solid sides. A link wall on the north side has a projecting section under a plain pediment, connecting to a two-storey former coach house that has a moulded pediment. Extending north of the coach house is a downswept wall that ends in pyramid-capped gate piers leading to the service yard.
