Description
No 128 Gough Road is a substantial Italianate villa built between 1850 and 1855, and it is the largest house on the street. The building has two storeys and an attic, featuring a symmetrical three-bay front. A pilastered screen wall connects the villa to a coach house on the north side and screens a yard and service wing at the back. The plain elevation includes a deep plinth and rusticated quoins, with an entablature above the ground floor that serves as a sill course for the first floor. The large squared console brackets rise from the frieze bed mould to support the boxed overhanging eaves. The hipped slate roof has three renewed dormers.
The villa features large windows, with first-floor windows adorned with scale-patterned panelled pilaster strips and segmental pediments. The central window has an entablature that extends over a raised surround. The ground floor windows also have similar pilaster strips and ornate double scrolled console brackets, with the ground floor entablature breaking forward over them, supporting a blind balustrade balconette for the first-floor windows. Acanthus rinceaux decorate the friezes.
At the entrance, there is a Corinthian column porch set on a plinth, with a balustrade above and a flight of steps leading up to the door. The pilastered screen wall on the north side, which conceals the yard, has double doors topped with an entablature and a panel between the pilasters. At the coach house end, the wall rises above the entablature and features a large blind Diocletian window.
