Description

61 Wellington Road is a Grade II listed villa built between 1820 and 1825, notable for its fine stucco Grecian style. The building is two stories high with a symmetrical three-bay front, featuring an additional bay that is splayed out to the north. The façade includes plain quoin pilasters on either side, while the central entrance bay is adorned with a paired Grecian Corinthian order that supports a deep entablature with an acanthus scroll-decorated frieze and a pediment above. The roof is low and hipped, covered with slate and set behind a parapet.

The ground floor windows are glazing bar sashes set within eared architrave surrounds. A portico porch features paired Soanian incised piers and a segmental arch, with wreaths in the frieze and a blocking course in the pediment. The round-headed doorway has an architrave surround, panelled reveals, and soffit, with a two-leaf door that is marginally glazed and panelled, topped by a fanlight with a looped radial pattern. The splayed additional bay includes some fenestration, with the entablature carried over from the main block.

A screen wall to the coach house abuts the splay and features a segmental arch that leads to a side stable yard. The rear garden elevation, which is on a terrace, mirrors the front's details but includes a giant order flanking each end bay, each topped with a pediment. This villa is recognized as one of the earliest examples of the larger-scale villa designs on the Calthorpe Estate.
