Description
76 and 77 Wellington Road are an early 18th century semi-detached pair of villas, built between 1820 and 1830 as part of the Calthorpe Estate. The design is symmetrical, featuring a four-bay main block and two-storey, one-bay wings set back. The building is stucco-faced with a plinth and first-floor sill band extending to the wings. It has a hipped slate roof to the main block, with flat eaves on shallow brackets and a plain stucco frieze below, and central stucco chimney stacks. The wings have gabled frontages. The windows are sash windows; the central section has four-pane glazing, while the outer bays have three-pane glazing above the doorways. A distinctive feature of the ground-floor windows is the crisply moulded blind semi-circular arches, incorporating scroll and anthemion motifs. Broad, engaged Tuscan column doorways, each with a full entablature, provide access via two steps. The doors are of six fielded panels, recessed for a round arched order within panelled reveals, and are topped by fanlights with marginal and curvilinear glazing. The sash windows in the wings have slightly cambered heads; the ground floor of the wing to number 77 originally incorporated a gig house.
