Description

This is a pair of semi-detached villas, numbers 16 and 17 Wellington Road, built around 1840. They are two-storey structures with three bays each, rendered in stucco and featuring Greek architectural details. Each front has quoin pilasters at the sides, a plinth, a sill band, and a frieze. The roofs are slate with shallow boxed eaves and corniced chimneys topped with ornamental posts. The windows are sash windows, with glazing bars. The first-floor windows are set within moulded architraves, while the ground-floor windows are framed by eared architraves in an Egyptian style, ornamented with acanthus and anthemion decorated keystones. A late 19th-century canted bay window with an entablature was inserted on the right-hand side of the ground floor of number 17. The doorways project forward, featuring panelled reveals and soffits, cornices resting on consoles. Number 16 preserves its original door, distinguished by incised patterning in the Soanian style, and a rectangular fanlight above.
