Description
Nos 34 and 35 Wellington Road are a pair of semi-detached stucco villas built around 1830-1840, accompanied by flanking coach houses. They are designed as a single composition and are set back behind a carriage sweep. Each villa has two storeys and a symmetrical three-bay front. The buildings feature a plinth and a ground floor that is channelled up to the first floor sill course, which is supported by baseless pilasters that define the first floor window bays.
The eaves cornice is deeply moulded, leading to low-pitched gable ends covered with slate. The stucco chimneys have cornices and swept blocking courses, topped with ornamental pots. The windows are revealed glazing bar sashes, with the first-floor windows framed in architrave surrounds. Each central first-floor window has a cornice supported by consoles, while the ground floor features large sashes with marginal glazing.
Originally, both villas had Ionic columned porches with deep entablatures; No 34 retains its porch intact, while No 35 only has the wall pilasters remaining, with a modern Georgian wood addition. The entrances are framed with architraves, featuring panelled reveals, panelled doors, and rectangular fanlights. Each villa is connected by handsome link walls that curve out to meet the corner of the two-storey pediment-gabled coach house, which has segmental arched coach doors and a small glazing bar sash above. This design creates an effective double villa appearance.
