Description
Bushwood is a large two-storey villa located on St James's Road in Edgbaston, dating from around 1830. The villa is set back from the road and features a carriage sweep. Originally, it had a symmetrical three-bay front, but a bowed end wing was added to the left side, likely around 1835. The original front includes a plinth and a first-floor sill band, with modillion brackets supporting the eaves of the hipped slate roof. The windows are revealed glazing bar sashes.
The villa has a large enclosed porch adorned with a triglyph frieze and a modillion cornice, featuring an arched entrance with sidelights, a panelled door beneath a moulded cornice, and a lunette fanlight. The extensions also have hipped slate roofs. The bowed end wing is parapeted and includes a first-floor stringcourse, with a tripartite sash window on the ground floor of the bow. To the right, there is a two-storey canted bay window from around 1840, which matches the original house in terms of windows, stringcourse, and eaves cornice, but has a higher hipped roof.
Additionally, there is a long low wing to the right that is three windows wide. A long service wing extends to the rear, featuring dentil eaves and glazing bar casements, and is screened by a yard wall with gate piers.
