Description
Woodfield is an early 19th-century villa located on Wellington Road in Edgbaston, Birmingham. Built around 1820, this substantial stucco villa has two storeys and features five bays, with a three-bay entrance front at the east end. A former coach house is attached to the west end of the building. The villa has a plinth and a first-floor sill band, topped with a hipped slate roof that has flat bracketed eaves and corniced stucco chimney stacks.
The east entrance front showcases revealed glazing bar sash windows, which are tall on the ground floor and include later marginal glazing. An elegant porch features two pairs of Tuscan columns, an entablature with a central panel, and a flat eaves cornice that matches the villa's eaves. The doorcase has a reeded corner block architrave, panelled reveals, and a panelled and glazed door.
The five-bay north front has plain glazing bar sash windows and a secondary doorway framed by an architrave surround with consoles supporting a cornice. The south garden front also features revealed glazing bar sashes within eared architrave surrounds that have cornices. There is a break for the entrance front return, which includes an addition of a sun lounge with marginal glazed French casements that complement the original round-headed marginal glazed ground floor window.
The coach house, which extends to the boundary wall with the road, is constructed of painted brick and has dentil eaves beneath a hipped slate roof. It is topped with a gracefully arcaded cupola featuring a lead dome ball finial and a weathervane. Inside, the villa retains original simple Regency mouldings and corner block architrave doorcases. The staircase is plain but well-crafted, with a cut string, slightly fluted bannisters, and a continuous moulded handrail.
