Description

Numbers 37 and 38 on Calthorpe Road in Edgbaston are a pair of semi-detached villas built around 1835, designed as one composition. These two-storey stucco buildings feature three-bay fronts that are highlighted by giant Tuscan pilasters, which are coupled at the center to create a division between the two homes. The pilasters support an entablature with a projecting cornice and a blocking course that is raised in a panel above the entrance bays. The villas have glazing bar sash windows set within architrave surrounds. In the 1860s, canted pilastered bay windows were added to the inner bays of each front on the ground floor. The doorways are pilastered with panelled reveals and feature a looped glazing pattern in the rectangular fanlights above. Each villa has a single-storey coachhouse that is pedimented and pilastered, linked by screen walls that include segmental arched side entrances at the corners of the houses.

Notably, in February and March 1940, Otto Robert Frisch and Rudolf Peierls lived at number 38 while conducting nuclear research at Birmingham University, which contributed to the development of the first atomic bomb.
