Description
Nos 23 and 23A on Highfield Road are a pair of substantial two-storey stucco villas built around 1840, showcasing classical and Italianate architectural details. Originally designed as identical structures with a recessed link bay, No 23 underwent alterations around 1865. Both villas feature three-bay fronts, with a channelled ground floor, a first-floor sill course, a frieze, a moulded cornice, and a parapet.
The modifications to No 23 include two two-storey canted bays adorned with composite pilasters, a dentil course entablature that spans the ground floor, and composite columns flanking the doorway. It also has modillion brackets on the main cornice and a pierced parapet. In contrast, No 24 retains its original architrave-framed windows, which have splayed feet on the ground floor plinth, and an eared architrave doorcase set in a panelled strip frame with stepped console brackets supporting the moulded cornice.
Additionally, the south-east flank of No 23 features an Italianate wing from around 1850, characterized by rusticated quoins, a panelled chimney breast situated between two French windows with dentil cornices, and archivolt arched windows on the first floor.
