Description
Nos. 18 and 19 Highfield Road are a pair of symmetrical classical stucco villas dating from around 1840. They are two-storey buildings with three-bay fronts that are narrowly detached and connected by a short screen wall. Each villa features giant "primitive" Tuscan quoin pilasters and a shallow central break, with the frieze and cornice capping in the same plane. The plinth serves as the first-floor sill course for the flanking bays. The villas have set-back slate roofs with altered dormers and linked stucco chimney stacks on the gable ends.
The ground floor windows are tripartite, rising from the plinth and featuring small console heads to the mullions, along with elongated consoles that support a cornice and a blocking course above a frieze adorned with rosettes. The first-floor glazing bar sashes are framed by eared architrave surrounds. No. 18 has had its right-hand ground floor window replaced around 1880-90 with a "Flemish" pilastered rectangular bay window, which is carved over the center to resemble a porch with a symmetrical pediment, dentil cornice, and blocking course with shaped dies. The original doorcase, with panelled reveals and a rectangular marginal and diamond-glazed fanlight, remains intact.
No. 19 retains a Tuscan column porch with a deep entablature and the same doorway as No. 18. Additionally, No. 18 features a parapetted coach house with a segmental arch, connected by a two-storey link to the house, while No. 19 has a similar link but with the coach house rebuilt.
