Description

Nos 3 and 4 Highfield Road are a pair of semi-detached villas built around 1830, showcasing late Regency architectural style. These two-storey buildings have a symmetrical design, featuring pediment gable wings that flank a central range with two broad bays and entrance bays at the corners. The ground floor is channelled and separated between the wings by an impressive seven-bay verandah, supported by scrolled iron plaster standards, with the ends over wider doorways. The roofs are covered with slate and have shallow eaves friezes.

The recessed central range has French casements that open onto the verandah. The arched doorways are topped with lunette fanlights that have a radial mouchette pattern. The first-floor windows of No 4 are simply revealed sashes, while No 3 features windows with splayed eared architraves. Both wings have moulded pediments and similar first-floor windows, but the ground floor has canted bay windows with pilasters and pent roofs, dating from around 1860. No 3 includes a slightly recessed service wing with two windows matching those of the main house and a downswept shaped parapet on the roof. The service wing of No 4 is set much further back and has been altered, retaining only the first-floor window. Notably, J.R.R. Tolkien lived at No 4 from 1910 to 1911.
