Description
Giles House is an Italianate house built around 1855, located on the north side of Harborne Road in Harborne, Birmingham. It is notable for being the birthplace of Sir Austin Chamberlain, who lived from 1836 to 1937. The house is constructed of red brick with stucco quoins on either side and features a slate roof. It has a prominent moulded plinth.
The ground floor windows are round-arched, adorned with stucco capitals and gauged brick voussoirs, set within brick relieving arches that have stuccoed keystones. The first-floor windows are four-centred, also featuring gauged brick voussoirs and resting on a moulded stucco sill band. There is a panelled eaves frieze supported by brackets.
To the right of the main façade, there is an entrance porch with an openwork iron arch and a fanlight. A corrugated iron lean-to extends along the passage, which is four bays long and has similar openwork iron arches on the sides. The door is located within a single-storeyed brick vestibule.
