Description

Nos. 83 and 84 Southtown Road are a pair of houses built in the late 18th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. The houses are constructed of stuccoed and whitewashed brick, topped with a roof of concrete pantiles. They stand two storeys high and feature a four-window range. Each house is divided into two bays, with a round entrance arch that leads to a passage at the rear, which is fitted with cast-iron gates. The ground floor has a rusticated appearance.

Flanking the central arch are two 20th-century doors, both set under recessed arches. No. 83 has a 6/6 horned sash window in a recess to the left, along with two similar sash windows on the first floor. Between these first-floor windows is a plaque that reads: "J.S. Cotman/Painter and Etcher/lived here from April 1812/until December 1823." No. 84 features late 20th-century top-hung casement windows. The gabled roof has two flat-topped 20th-century dormers with casements and two ridge stacks.

At the rear, there is a large single-storeyed gabled service wing, which is lit by late 20th-century casements. The rear wall of both houses also has 20th-century casements. The interior of No. 83 includes a stick-baluster staircase with turned newels, although the balusters were replaced in 1991. The roof was re-done between 1984 and 1985, which included work on No. 84.
