Description
The Church of St James is a parish church located in Great Yarmouth. It was built between 1870 and 1878 by architect J.P. Seddon, with the aisles added from 1902 to 1908 by Bottle & Olley. The church is constructed of cut and knapped flint with red brick dressings and features slate roofs.
The exterior includes a striking east end with flushwork panels surrounding a five-light Geometric east window. The corners of the chancel rise into polygonal pinnacles. Each aisle has a roundel with tracery at its east end. The north aisle contains a three-bay vestry to the east, which is illuminated by three lancet windows and features an arched door. To the west of the vestry are three three-light arched Perpendicular windows, separated by buttresses. The portal at the west end of the aisle is adorned with four orders of chamfered brick arches, and above it is a bell-cote suspended between two polygonal turrets. The west end is lit by two paired lancets with two-light Decorated tracery and a rosette above. The south aisle has three-light Perpendicular windows, while the roofs of the aisles are lean-to and the nave roof is gabled.
Inside, the church features a four-bay arcade supported by drum piers on tall bases with stiff-leaf capitals, which hold pointed brick arches. The interior showcases a pattern of yellow and blue brick, a boarded and arched roof, and a thin timber arch that separates the nave from the chancel. The aisles have rafter roofs.
