Description

GREAT YARMOUTH

TG5206 QUEEN'S ROAD 839-1/6/243 (South side) St Nicholas' Hospital, CSSD Store

GV II

Mortuary and chapel, disused. c1810. Red brick of various shades, with hipped slate roof. Rectangular single-depth plan. Single storey; windowless range; 2-window S range. Plain block with a brick 'metopes' to a Doric frieze around the eaves, and W raised door surround with moulded brick cornices, and a large corner buttress. The S end has 2 round-arched windows which match those of the chapel on the W side of the Hospital (qv). Roof with 2 roof lights and ridge vent. INTERIOR not inspected. HISTORY: the exact function of the building is not certain, but mortuaries including chapels of rest were found at hospitals, and generally have only roof lights, with the chapel at one end. The eaves detail matches that on the isolation wing (qv). Tied by detailing and fenestration to an important function dating from early in the hospital's history, this is a rare example of its type, and included for its historical interest with the other listed buildings.
