St Nicholas Hospital Cssd Store

St Nicholas Hospital CSSD Store is a disused mortuary and chapel built around 1810. It features red brick in various shades and has a hipped slate roof. The building has a rectangular single-depth plan and is a single storey with a windowless range and a two-window south range. The plain block is adorned with brick 'metopes' that form a Doric frieze around the eaves, and it has a raised door surround on the west side with moulded brick cornices and a large corner buttress. The south end includes two round-arched windows that match those of the chapel on the west side of the hospital. The roof has two roof lights and a ridge vent. The interior has not been inspected. The exact function of the building is uncertain, but it is typical for mortuaries to include chapels of rest and generally have only roof lights, with the chapel located at one end. The eaves detail is similar to that on the isolation wing of the hospital. This building is tied by its detailing and fenestration to an important function from the early history of the hospital and is considered a rare example of its type, included for its historical interest alongside other listed buildings.
