Description
The Scenic Railway Roller Coaster at Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach is a timber roller coaster built in 1928 by Erich Heidrich, which opened to the public in 1932.
The structure features timber posts set on concrete pads, reinforced with iron, and includes iron tracks and sheet steel cladding. The roller coaster has a linear plan, oriented roughly north-south, with loops at each end and a crossover section in the center.
The exterior consists of a timber lattice framework, with the timber posts supporting double loops and crossover sections. The iron tracks date from various periods, and the sheet steel cladding, added in the late 1970s, is painted. A large chain on a steep incline at the rear raises the linked cars, after which the ride operates on gravity, providing riders with thrilling deep plunges followed by smaller drops. The speed of the ride is managed by a brakeman who rides on the vehicle.
The station is located on the west side and features planked walkways. Late 20th-century storage and maintenance sheds are situated within the loops. A 21st-century children's ride is integrated at a low level with the roller coaster, and part of a monorail ride occupies the same space at a higher level, with the sheet steel cladding at the south end allowing the monorail to pass through.
Despite ongoing maintenance that has led to the replacement of many structural components, the roller coaster maintains the original configuration established in 1932.
