Description
The Masonic Royal Assembly Rooms, built in 1863 by HH Collins, are assembly rooms located on South Beach Parade in Great Yarmouth. The building was partly damaged by fire in 1870 and subsequently became a masonic lodge under the patronage of HRH Prince of Wales. Constructed from gault brick with slate roofs, the structure is two storeys high and features a hipped block with five blind arched windows. There are stacks on the north and south slopes of the roof.
In front of the building, there is an arcade of five bays supported by Tuscan order columns, with the outer bays filled in during the 1930s to create storage rooms. To the right and left, there are single-storey extensions, each featuring a canted window bay facing east. A triple arcade on square piers leads to the main doorway on the north return.
Inside, the main room occupies the entire central block and extends through both storeys, measuring five by three bays. Tuscan order pilasters with egg-and-dart decoration on the capitals rise to an entablature with a plain frieze. Above the cornice, there are blind semicircular arches that correspond to the blind windows. Curved brackets extend from the cornice to the panelled plaster ceiling, which is adorned with fleur-de-lys roses and short pendants. A balcony runs along the west side, featuring a cast-iron balustrade.
