Description

No. 35 Calthorpe Road is a detached villa built around 1835, constructed of coursed stucco and featuring an intricate and ornate design influenced by Graeco-Egyptian styles. The building has one main storey with a low attic above, and each main elevation consists of three bays, with Doric wings at the rear.

The entrance front, which is narrower and faces the corner of the triangular plot, boasts a tetrastyle Greek Doric portico supported by fluted coupled columns, adorned with an acanthus scroll frieze and pediment. The doorcase includes leaded ornamentation, and tall, thin arched sidelights are framed by incised Soanian scrolls, with a weather over. Similar sidelights are positioned immediately on either side of the portico. The main ground floor windows feature cambered incised arches that spring from broad piers with wreathed and panelled quoins. Coupled pilaster strips at the corners support a deep first-floor entablature decorated with wreaths and Greek keys. The upper storey is articulated with a series of coupled and single pilaster strips. Above the portico is a small framed window, while the side windows have been lengthened and integrated into the eaves course, topped with a cornice and straight parapet. The roof is a low nipped elate style.

The side elevations display similar, albeit slightly simplified, details. The north-west garden front features a central French window and two blind bays on the first floor. The south-east front facing Calthorpe Road has a central blank window set within an "Egyptian" eaved architrave supported by palmette brackets. A service range extends to the north-west, which includes a former integral coachhouse; some alterations to the fenestration are present, along with pilaster strips on both floors by the side entrance.

The interior has been largely modernised, but the entrance hall retains a carved geometric staircase in an open well, featuring cast turned bannisters with narrow scrolled lyre standards that continue across the galleried landing with a continuous moulded handrail. The property includes a large garden with a serpentine carriage sweep.
