Description
Springfield House is an early 19th-century house located on the north side of Main Road, Upper Brailes. It is constructed of brick with a lined stucco finish to the south and east elevations, and has hipped slate roofs with clustered stone ridge stacks on rendered stone bases. The house has rusticated quoins and is set out in a T-plan.
The main entrance, on the east end, is through a 6-panelled door with a moulded architrave and a fluted pilaster surround, leading into a Greek Doric porch. This entrance is flanked by tall sash windows with stone cased surrounds and floating cornices. The ground floor windows have glazing bars, and the first floor has three sashes with stone cased surrounds and glazing bars (totalling 12 panes). One of the first-floor windows is blocked.
The south elevation has a five-window range. A gable-fronted bay of two window widths, extending two storeys plus an attic, is positioned to the right. This bay has a ball finial. The ground floor of the bay has four sash windows and a doorway, all with stone casing, floating cornices, and glazing bars. The first floor of the bay contains five sashes with stone cased surrounds and glazing bars, two of which have floating cornices. An elliptical-headed window is located in the attic. A moulded stone cornice runs at the first floor level, and a moulded wood eaves cornice is present throughout.
The interior features Regency and Victorian fireplaces, moulded ceiling bands, decorated architraves, and a stone flag floor in the cellar.
