Description
The Old Forge is a late 17th-century house in Upper Brailes, built in two phases. It is constructed of regular coursed ironstone on the right-hand side and limestone on the left. The roof is steeply pitched and thatched, with stone end and ridge stacks. The building is one storey plus an attic, with a four-window front. There are two entrances, each with a plank door set within a wooden frame and beneath a wooden lintel. The doorway on the left has a stop-chamfered lintel and a small overlight. A three-light stone-mullioned window with a hood mould and label stop is on the ground floor to the left. To the right of the doorway, and flanking it, are a three-light and a two-light metal casement window, both with fragments of hood moulds remaining. The attic floor has two three-light and two two-light metal casements set partly into the thatch.
Inside, the house features stop-chamfered beams, chamfered joists, inglenook fireplaces, and a winder staircase. One fireplace retains small cupboards with decorated doors. Plank doors are fitted with strap hinges. A ground floor room on the left was reportedly used for shoeing horses around 1900.
