Description

Coopers Cottage is a house dating to the late 17th century, with 19th and late 20th-century additions and alterations. It is timber-framed, with partly plastered walls on a rubble plinth, and brick additions. The roof is thatched with a brick end stack, and tile roofs to the later additions. The house is arranged in an L-shape; the original north wing has a late 20th-century south wing replacing 19th-century and earlier 20th-century additions. The gable end has an entrance with a 20th-century battened door to the left of a small 19th-century brick outhouse featuring a return plank door and a small window. A stack is positioned off-centre to the right of the window, and contains a 2-light 20th-century casement. The left return has a window with a 2-light leaded casement with an iron opening mechanism, and a similar casement to a raking dormer. An adjacent 20th-century wing has three gabled dormers and casements with simulated leaded glazing. The right return displays exposed square framing and two windows with 2-light leaded casements, along with a 2-light small-paned casement to the left of the center. The rear elevation has much-renewed framing, a ground-floor window with a leaded casement, and a first-floor window with a 2-light leaded casement, both featuring iron opening casements. A large external lateral stack is present on the 20th-century wing. The interior includes flagstone floors, stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, and a large fireplace with a bressumer and hood. The building has group value.
