Description

The Old Forge is a cottage dating from the 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the early 19th and 20th centuries. It features a timber box-frame construction with square plastered panels and tension braces, while the north gable end is faced in brick. The roof is covered with plain tiles, has gabled ends, and raised eaves at the front, along with an external brick stack on the south gable end.

The building has a three-bay plan, with a narrower center bay. The left room, located at the south end, is heated by a fireplace in the gable end. There is a 20th-century single-storey addition at the south end.

The exterior is asymmetrical on the east front, featuring small 20th-century metal frame casements and a small fixed light window with leaded panes from the early 19th century located under the eaves at the center. To the right of the center is a doorway with a 20th-century timber-framed porch. A 20th-century single-storey brick extension is also on the right. The rear of the building has exposed timber framing. The north gable end is painted brick and includes a canted bay window on the ground floor with a leaded pane casement and a 20th-century casement window above.

Inside, the cottage showcases exposed wall-framing and framed partitions. The left room features a chamfered cross-beam without stops and exposed purlins. There is a 17th-century panelled door on the ground floor at the south end, which has scratch mouldings.
