Description

Sykes Cottages comprises four houses, dating to the 17th century with alterations and additions from around 1820. The houses are timber-framed with painted brick infill, with a painted brick section to the left end of No.1. They stand on a rubble plinth, incorporating some coursed blue lias rubble, and have a thatched roof with brick end stacks and two stacks along the ridge. The plan is arranged around four units.

The exterior is two storeys with a seven-window range. No.1, at the left end, features segmental-headed openings with splayed reveals. There are four entrances, each with a gabled canopy sheltering a 20th-century plank door. The ground floor includes a window with three small-paned casements and a small window to No.1; other ground floor windows have renewed small-paned casements. First-floor windows are similar, with the fourth from the left being a projecting three-light wooden-mullioned window with leaded glazing. The roof is gabled.

A single-storey brick extension with a tile roof is situated at the right end. The left return has two first-floor segmental-headed windows with two-light small-paned casements bracketing a projecting stack. The rear elevation is similar, with a bay to the right of centre featuring a coursed rubble ground floor and timber framing above, containing a small window. Most other rear windows have 20th-century casements.

The interior was not inspected.
