Description

Cleve Cottage, also known as No.4, is part of a row of four houses located on Chapel Street in Welford-on-Avon. These houses date back to the 17th century and are constructed with a timber frame and plaster infill, sitting on a rubble plinth with some roughcast. They feature thatched roofs, each with a central brick stack at the front of the ridge, two pairs of ridge stacks, and end stacks. Each house has a two-unit plan and is single-storey plus attic, with a total of eight windows across the row.

The houses mostly have renewed plank doors. Each house includes two casement windows on the ground floor and two eyebrow dormers with two-light casements. No.1 has an entrance with a half-glazed door sheltered by a thatched hood, positioned to the right of the windows, which feature two-light small-paned casements within wooden architraves. No.2 has its entrance with a plank door to the left of a 20th-century small-paned top-hung casement and an additional three-light small-paned casement. No.3, known as Tally-ho, is roughcast and has a central entrance in a catslide porch, flanked by windows with two-light and three-light small-paned casements, including iron opening casements. No.4, Cleve Cottage, has two-light and three-light casements on the ground floor. Each house also features two raking dormers with two-light small-paned casements, some of which have crown glass and wrought-iron casement fasteners. The right return of the row has an end stack and an entrance with a 20th-century porch to the right, along with a rear catslide outshut. The interior has not been inspected.
