Description

The Old Post Office, Middle Cottage, and Cliffe Cottage are three houses located on Kings Cliffe Road in Apethorpe, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. They are built from squared coursed limestone and topped with Collyweston slate roofs. Originally, the buildings formed an L-shape with one- and two-unit plans, consisting of single-storey sections with attics and two-storey sections.

The front elevation features an eight-window range at ground floor level. On the far right, there is a 4-light stone mullion window with ovolo moulding. The central part of the ground floor has five horizontal sliding sash windows with glazing bars, all set beneath wooden lintels. To the right, there are two 19th-century casement windows, also under wooden lintels. The first floor on the left has three leaded casements situated under the eaves, while the right side has three hipped eaves dormers, each with leaded casements. There are two plank doors located between the windows on the right, both under wooden lintels. The right side features an ashlar gable parapet and stone stacks at the ridge.

The rear elevation, to the left, has a two-window range of leaded casements under wooden lintels. The leftmost ground floor window is a 20th-century casement. There is a four-panel door under a wooden lintel to the right and a stable door under a wooden lintel to the left. The left side also has an ashlar gable parapet, with ashlar ridge and end stacks that still show remnants of moulded cornices. The interiors have not been inspected, but The Old Post Office is noted for having moulded spine beams.
