Description

The Nest and Tymss Cottage are two houses, likely dating from the early 18th century, with extensions and alterations made in the early 19th century. The construction is timber-frame with painted plaster and brick infill, and painted brick to the right, set on a rubble plinth. The roofs are hipped thatch and gabled Welsh slate, with brick end stacks and an axial stack.

Originally a two-unit timber-framed cottage, it was extended by a two-storey unit to the right in the early 19th century, and the central unit was raised to two storeys at the same time.

The Nest, to the left, is a single-storey plus attic, single-window range. It has an entrance with a 20th-century door to the left of a window with a two-light casement. A raking dormer has a 20th-century two-light casement. A hipped outshut to the left return has a small window with an iron opening casement, and tall framing panels with a middle rail. Tymss Cottage, to the right, forms a two-storey, two-window range. It includes an entrance with an open gabled porch leading to a door with six flush panels (two glazed). Flanking windows have a segmental head with two-light and three-light casements, and smaller windows to the first floor have older two-light casements with iron opening casements. Small 20th-century additions have been made to the rear.

The interior of The Nest was not inspected. Tymss Cottage features spine beams, an open fireplace with a brick hood, a winding staircase, some plank doors and two queen post trusses, one of which has been cut for a doorway. Most of the timber framing remains in the rear walls, now internal. This building demonstrates group value.
