Description
E.B. Barnes and Hawkins is a pair of shops with dwellings above, dating from the early 19th century, with possible origins in the 18th century. The building is constructed of rendered brick and features a stone-coped gable on the left. It has a slate roof with brick end stacks and stands three storeys high with a five-window range and double-depth plans.
E.B. Barnes, on the left, has double, part-glazed doors at the centre, flanked by pilasters and a 19th-century shop front with plate glass windows. Hawkins, on the right, features a 20th-century glazed door, with 19th-century shop windows on either side. Above the entrance, there is a very shallow hood supported on seven consoles. The first floor has five openings, each with a 12-pane sash window, while the second floor has five openings with 9-pane sash windows. All sashes are unhorned. The interior of each shop has spine beams. This building is included for its group value.
