Description
17 and 19 King Street is a pair of houses, now functioning as two shops with offices above, dating from the late 18th century. The buildings are constructed of brick and topped with a slate roof. They are three stories high and feature a six-window range. Each house has original entrances on either side, with a shallow segmental pediment above the left entrance, which has a six-panelled door, and a plain architrave on the right. The late 19th-century shop fronts have heavy panelled fascias supported by paired console brackets. The upper windows are four-pane sashes with finely gauged flat-arched brick heads that include key stones. The attic storey has smaller four-pane sashes. There are end wall stacks.
Inside, the original staircases with turned balusters and moulded tread ends are preserved in the entrance hallways on each side. In the upper room of No. 19, there is one original fireplace with a basket grate, and the ground floor rear of No. 19 also retains an early 19th-century kitchen range.
