Description
38, 40 and 42 King Street are a row of three cottages, with one currently used for commercial purposes. They date from the early 17th century and have been extensively altered, particularly around 1920. The cottages are timber-framed, partially plastered and painted, with brick in the gables and rear elevation. The roof is covered with shingles, with some plain tiles at the rear. The buildings are one and a half storeys high and feature five inserted or renewed dormer windows in the roof. The layout varies: No. 38 appears to be a single-unit, while the others have two-unit plans.
No. 38 has a door in a lean-to porch against the gable wall, with a window inserted in the early 20th century featuring wood mullions and a transom, small leaded panes, and latticed upper lights. No. 40 has a part-glazed and panelled door next to a stack on the right, with a small two-light window above it, covered by a canopy. Its main window is identical to that of No. 38. No. 42 also has a part-glazed and panelled door next to a stack, with three-light latticed windows on each side, each with shallow wood canopies above. An additional doorway was inserted in the gable wall when it was converted to shop premises. The interior has not been inspected.
